Description:
Attunement Parent Handout - Connection, Co-Regulation & Child Emotional Safety Printable
Learn how attunement helps you notice, understand, and respond to a child’s emotional and physical needs in ways that build connection.
Attunement is the practice of tuning into a child’s internal experience, noticing their cues, emotions, body signals, sensory needs, and behavior with curiosity and compassion. A child may seem irritable, withdrawn, aggressive, clingy, sarcastic, or overwhelmed when they are actually tired, hungry, anxious, embarrassed, overstimulated, afraid, or needing connection. Attunement helps adults slow down and recognize that behavior may be communicating something the child cannot yet express with words.
Attunement starts with noticing and understanding. Before trying to change a behavior or help a child calm down, adults can pause and ask, “What might this child be experiencing right now?” and “What might they need?” This printable helps adults develop that awareness so they can respond to the child’s underlying needs rather than reacting only to the behavior they see.
